One of the advantages to using Blogger over WordPress is that Google (its parent company) seems to index Blogger blogs instantly and more often than WordPress blogs. One of the reasons for this is likely that Google better "understands" the workings of Blogger blogs -- how each part of the site relates to the others. Google may also want to give its authors an advantage in this regard.
Fortunately, there is something you can do to help your WordPress blog get indexed faster: installing an automatically updating XML sitemap. A sitemap is basically instructions on how your site fits together. Search engine spiders (programs that "crawl" through and index the contents of your blog) can use a sitemap to help them find everything and help determine appropriate relevance. Like just about anything else you could think of needing, there's a plugin that will automatically create and maintain a Google-readable sitemap.
- Download Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator
- Extract the file and upload the folder entitled "google-sitemap-generator" to your "wp-content/plugins/" directory.
- From your Dashboard, go to Plugins and activate the one entitled "Google XML Sitemaps."
- From your Dashboard, go to Options > XML-Sitemap. Click on the Rebuild Sitemap link to create your sitemap for the first time.
Now every time you create a new post or page, your XML sitemap will update itself. Nicest of all, the XML sitemap plugin is also compatible with Yahoo!, Ask.com, and MSN Search!
