And I don't (necessarily) mean the romantic ones (although I know of a couple that have worked out). Quite a broad topic really, could take it from the angle of how friendships (or acquaintances) develop relative to those in the real world, or a list of things people do in WoW (that they probably would never do in RL.. Or maybe they would with some people?) that irk you to no end and have you sending them to the abyss of /ignore faster than trade spamming inappropriate jokes?

I'm sure we've all dealt with people at either extreme, those we make fast friends with, and a friendship that may endure many years and even across multiple games... Through to those that while they may've been within our guild or circle of game friends for some time? Are just an absolute drain to be around for any period of time.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that the beating of dead horses is quite possibly audible from space on this one, but even if you don't have a unique take on the matter, perhaps you have a rather unique (or at least interesting!) story of your own on the matter.


I have a post which brushes the topic sort of, which can be found here, but this isn't my submission to the shared topic idea. Rather I think I have the proto-idea of a followup in the works, from the complete opposite side of things, where Words are just too much! i.e., heard Saresa tweet the other night regarding someone whom had announced on Vent that they had no RL friends at all.. Followed up with the statement that no-one ever wanted to follow them on facebook and they didn't know why. ... Awkward much? Yeah, I think we've all known someone like this at some point.

The ones worth mentioning I don't want them to stumble upon me ranting and raving about them. Hm.
And the ones I don't mind posting about, I'm not sure what to post

Perhaps it would be possible to talk about them in as non specific a way so as that they couldn't recognise themselves? If not, perhaps could approach it from the angle of the traits themselves, and not the people behind them?

If not though, and there is no chance of them not being able to know you're talking about them? Could go the other way instead. Talk about the traits on display in the people you love spending time with ingame, that makes gaming with your particular group a joy even if there are a few bad apples there.

Perhaps not as fun or cathartic as the negative side, but ah well.

Hah, seriously though, glad so many participated in this one! Exams et al have made my own contribution here somewhat delayed. I'll try and get it up today though, and link everyone that has posted so far here. While I haven't made any comments on those listed yet, I *have* read them all.

In some ways, I'm glad have waited. There was a point raised in Ophelie's post on The Bossy Pally that I hadn't really put words to before, so will probably want to mention that in my post as well.

Hopefully it wasn't a point raised in the comments! Never make a sappy post before a gquit, the mud will flyyyyyyyyyy.

Hah, no, it was not from comments.

Not to discuss it too further here - although I guess the harm is somewhat removed now that posts have already been done! - but the point I was referring to that online friends are much more 'in your head', much more prone to being far closer scrutinised and analysed about every nuance and thing that text makes unclear, than when compared to the typical IRL friendship.

So I took the plunge and finally started my blog up. My first post wasn't really a post...more like just basic info. So when I saw this topic and wrote a post I figured I go ahead and post it up right away as my maidenhead. Here you go:
