How does one go about getting plugins to work on their page? I download the plugins and put them in my wp-content\plugins folder, but I am guessing I need to change files somewhere where I am hosting. Is this right? How does one do that? I host through DreamHost if anyone is familiar with them.

nope, once they are on that folder you can just activate them from the plugins section of the admin interface.

I worked it all out eventually thanks! If there is anyone else who is a total dunce like me, this is how I did it (everyone else can feel free to roll their eyes and say 'Well, DUH!')

- Go waywayway back to the emails I received from my host. One of these contained a seperate password that I would need to use FTP.
- I used FileZilla for this, but my host has it's own FTP as well. Not sure if all hosts do. FileZilla is nice and easy though.
- Logged in using the address they gave me to login to, and that password.
- Found the WP files my host has.
- Opened my own WP files.
- Drop and drag addons from one side to the other!

This question has been answered numerous times and it’s fair to say that even I have answered this question half a dozen times. However I thought I would be able to find a solution for this, but it seems there is some problem changing the files as you have said. Don’t sweat it though! I am working on it!

The way I do it is to simply search for the plugin in the WP admin interface (Plugins > Add new > Search > Install - done!) and I don't even have to mess around with a manual install.
