We all hate spam, so let me tell you about
Invisible Defender.
Invisible defender adds two "dummy" fields to comments, login, and registration. You and your users cannot see these dummy fields. Bots, however, do automagically see all available fields, even invisible ones. Bots like to fill things out, so they will attempt to put text in the invisi-fields. Text in the invisi-field is a trigger for Invisible Defender to say "no, I don't think so" and it does not allow the comment to submit. This is a guard before your Akismet even gets there, because the comment never submits.
Less spam? Absolutely. My dashboard says it's blocked 738 comments. That's 738 comments that don't even reach Akismet to filter. I think that total is from the last... 2 months? Maybe 3?
